MLA Board President Joel Smith serves as legal counsel and advisor to labor and civic organizations on the national, state and local levels, offering advice on transactions, budgeting, and internal structures and management. He has represented unions that represent workers in occupations as diverse as national professional sports, television, movies, theater arts, building trades, public schools, community college and undergraduate instruction, retail sales, manufacturing, public transit and heavy industry. Mr. Smith helped organize employees of the University System of Maryland, various state and local governments, and the World Umpires Association, which is the collective bargaining agent for Major League Baseball's umpires.  He has served as labor counsel to the National Labor College of the George Meany Center, and is an elected fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.
